Indiana’s Applied Research Institute unveils new name and brand; awards first contract to Purdue University

INDIANAPOLIS (April 25, 2018) ─ The Applied Research Institute (ARI), a non-profit organization supported by the Governor of Indiana, presidents of top research universities, and industry leaders and working in collaboration with Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane), is changing its name to Indiana Innovation Institute (IN3) and is awarding its first contract to Purdue University.

IN3 brings a new approach to applied research. IN3 facilitates collaborative research teams to pursue major federal grants and contracts and perform corporate-sponsored research that will generate technology transfer and commercialization of military defense and other sectors of Indiana’s economy. As part of its new branding, IN3 is also launching a new website, www.IN3Indiana.com.

“Our new brand highlights Indiana and demonstrates the state’s ability to bring together an all-star group of leaders, top researchers and talent in government, industry and academia, along with a streamlined approach to drive applied research in a new direction,” General Gene Renuart USAF (Ret.), chairman and CEO, Indiana Innovation Institute said. “Our resources and partnerships allow us to work on projects that push the pace of innovation to achieve faster solutions that impact people’s lives. In addition, the opportunities for regional economic development offer great promise to benefit the I-69 corridor and Indiana as a whole.”

Trusted Microelectronics Contract Awarded to Purdue University

The first of those projects is developing trusted microelectronics, which are technologies that are counterfeit resistant and immune to a wide variety of attacks. These trusted microelectronics have applications in virtually all military products and drive a $189 billion commercial industry for products used every day.

 In response to an urgent need from the U.S. Navy, IN3 has awarded a $2.3 million contract to Purdue University to establish a broad consortium of researchers from Purdue, Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame in an effort entitled Achieving Scientifically Secured User Reassurance in Electronics (ASSURE). The ASSURE program comprises nine complementary projects that are specifically designed to develop technologies that help alleviate the issues of reliability, anti-counterfeiting, and cyber security in the semiconductor supply chain.

The two-year program combines researchers from the three universities with personnel from IN3 and NSWC Crane, to rapidly develop solutions that can be used by the Department of Defense (DoD) and industry.

“There is an obvious need in this country for more security in our electronics, especially those used in our national defense,” Purdue President Mitch Daniels said. “Purdue is a global leader in nanoscale modeling, microelectronics fabrication, and cybersecurity. When we combine our strengths with those of our capable partners at Indiana University, Notre Dame, and Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division, I have no doubt that we will soon come up with innovative solutions to this problem.”

The Indiana Innovation Institute (IN3), formerly the Applied Research Institute, was established with the support of a $16.2 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. in 2015.
